Making Science work in society
Resumo do Projeto
During the years since the 1992 Earth Summit Rio de Janeiro, consumption has emerged as a significant environmental policy issue, as the growing consumerism lifestyle was considered a major cause of global environmental and social problems, such as the over‐exploitation of natural resources, pollution and waste, violation of human rights and other animal’s rights. Therefore, there has been a growing worry on the subject of sustainable consumption as an integral contribution for sustainable development, demanding an important responsibility, not only for the industry and production side, but also for the consumer side. Although some industrialized countries have already tried to develop policies in this direction, the progress has been far from satisfactory in a general term, since the needs for material goods have been increasing in these countries.
This project will focus on these contrasting approaches, and through an understanding of one group –the student population –explore cross‐cultural lessons emerging from surveys of the pro‐environmental behaviour, attitudes and knowledge of the student groups in each country.
